Campsite Electric Metering is Coming
Why Campsite Metering is now the Route Forward

Over the winter (22/23) we have installed new electric hook up bollards that will take a pre-paid smart card so that our customers only pay for what they use in electric and not for what they don't. This is becoming increasingly common on campsites and caravan parks across the UK.
With the souring price of electricity in 2022 there was widespread panic in businesses that feared 600% price increases. Fortunately, prices have come down slightly at the start of 2023 but are still significantly up on previous years. Campsites like ourselves tended to include a estimated amount of average electric consumption within their pitch pricing. The resulted in two things:
- Some customers who burned a lot of juice benefitted at the expense of those that don't, so electric hook-ups or pitches become expensive for those just wishing to charge a mobile phone.
- Because electric has been paid for in the pitch price, customers are often not very green in their behaviour, burning unnecessary electric. In most cases campsite electric bills can be cut by 10s of thousands by encouraging greener habits, meaning far less juice could be consumed as an industry, which means we collectively play our part in not needing so much electricity from overseas. Hopefully this causes a drop in demand and therefore a drop in price, so everyone wins.
What we hope is that campers will ultimately benefit by having a cheaper and greener experience as we will alleviate the need to create a far more expensive nightly pitch price because of souring electric prices.
Legally, campsites can only charge electric at the price they are charged, so you will be guaranteed the best rate available to us and our climate benefits because we predict people to treat their consumption in a more considered way if they are paying for the units of energy used directly.
